This collection presents the rich mythology of the Western Shoshone people of central Nevada, whose traditions have long remained less documented than those of their neighboring Shoshonean tribes.
Recorded and analyzed by anthropologist Julian Haynes Steward, these myths illuminate the beliefs and storytelling traditions of a Great Basin culture whose cosmology shares affinities with that of Northern California tribes. Central to these narratives is Coyote-the mischievous trickster and creator figure-alongside other zoomorphic beings who shape the world through acts of wit, folly, and transformation.
Together, these tales offer rare insight into Shoshone worldviews, revealing how myth served as both moral guide and cultural memory. Steward's collection preserves a vital strand of Native American oral literature, deepening our understanding of the spiritual and imaginative life of the Western Shoshone people.
